Carrying a few simple items in your car can prevent the inconvenience of a breakdown turning into an unbearable calamity.
The Trusted Bear team wants everyone to stay safe and enjoy their motoring. So here’s our list of car essentials you should always carry. Remember too that some European countries have their own legal requirements for items you must have on board. Always check these if you plan to drive on the continent.
1 Basic Safety Items
Hi-viz vests and warning triangles literally save lives - particularly if you break down in the dark or on a country road. They alert other motorists and make you easier to see. You have to carry a hi-viz vest for each car occupant in many European countries including France.
2 Tools
The average family saloon doesn’t have space for a full toolkit. But a screwdriver with interchangeable heads, pliers, an adjustable wrench and some duct tape don't need much space and will often get you out of a tight spot.
3 Spare Bulbs and Fuses
A blown indicator or stop light bulb could prevent other road users from anticipating what you’re about to do. They could also earn you a fine. Carrying a suitable kit for your vehicle will help you stay safe and legal wherever you are, even when the car spares shops are shut.
4 First Aid Kit
These are recommended for driving in many European countries and compulsory in Austria and Croatia. A basic kit doesn’t cost much and can be really handy in the event of an accident. It might just save a life.
5 Food and Drink
Hopefully it won’t take too long for somebody to come and help if you break down. Bottled water will help prevent dehydration and a few snacks will tide you over until you can get a proper meal.
6 A Torch
Breakdowns don’t always happen in broad daylight. Keeping a wind-up torch in your glove box will also mean that you won't be relying on battery life.
7 A Map
Most of us have sat nav and phone apps - but what happens when technology, mobile coverage or battery life lets you down? Paper maps are useful to have in case of emergency.
8 The Right Shoes and Clothing
Your favourite comfy driving shoes might not be the best option if you have to walk a couple of miles to get help or wait safely outside of your car on a cold day. Carry a coat appropriate for the weather just in case.
9 A USB Charger
Being able to keep your mobile phone charged using your car battery will help you stay in touch with friends and your breakdown service.
10 The Reassurance of Breakdown Cover
You can easily take care of the above items for yourself. The best way to ensure that breakdowns are dealt with quickly is to travel with the reassurance of reliable breakdown cover - and that’s the bit that Trusted Bear can do for you.
